Keep Between the Ditches

When Ray and I were newlyweds, we made frequent visits to see our folks in Tennessee. When it was time to leave, Daddy would smile his amazing smile with that twinkle in his eye and say, “Keep between the ditches.”

That was Daddy’s way of reminding us to stay safe on the highways.

One of the greatest benefits of homeschooling is that you have all-day-long opportunities to train your children to keep between the ditches — not only on the highways — but in life.

The world is full of people — especially young people — who don’t know where the ditches are.

There is a way which seems right to a man,
But its end is the way of death.
Proverbs 14:12

How could they know where the ditches are if no one has ever taught them?

I know, O Lord, that a man’s way is not in himself,
Nor is it in a man who walks to direct his steps.
Jeremiah 10:23

They don’t even know that there are ditches. How could they ever stay between them?

Thank you for teaching your children where the boundaries are and for showing them how to stay between them.

Jesus said to him,
“I am the way, and the truth, and the life;
no one comes to the Father but through Me.
John 14:6

  1. This title made me laugh. I first heard it from my mother when I was learning to drive 43 years ago and I use it currently teaching my youngest to drive. I hadn’t ever thought of it as a General life lesson but you are so right, folks pay no attention to the ditches these days.
