Know It by Heart

Today I want simply to share with you the beautiful words of a hymn by Edward Mote. It is a hymn that has been in my heart since I was little. Many of you may know it by heart already. For others of you, it may be the first time you have heard of it.

My hope is built on nothing less
Than Jesus’ blood and righteousness.
I dare not trust the sweetest frame
But wholly lean on Jesus’ name.

Refrain:
On Christ, the solid rock, I stand;
All other ground is sinking sand,
All other ground is sinking sand.

In ev’ry high and stormy gale,
My anchor holds within the vale.
When all around my soul gives way,
He then is all my hope and stay.  Refrain

When He shall come with trumpet sound,
Oh, may I then in Him be found,
Dressed in His righteousness alone,
Faultless to stand before the throne. Refrain

I am grateful for parents who gave me an opportunity to know that hymn by heart and who introduced me to Jesus, “all my hope and stay.” I assure you that when I have felt as if all around my soul had given way, He always has been “all my hope and stay.”

“Know it by heart” — that is a powerful phrase. Every day you are instilling in your children things that they will know by heart. Good job, Mama!

Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you,
with all wisdom teaching
and admonishing one another
with psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs,
singing with thankfulness in your hearts to God.
Colossians 3:16
