Light After Dark

We’ve experienced late afternoon or evening thunderstorms every weekday this week. On Wednesday our power was off for a couple of hours which is a rare occurrence at our house. Our rural electric co-op does a great job.

Our house is so old that instead of light switches, several rooms have pull chains on fixtures in the middle of the ceiling. We keep more lights on than most folks so that Mother is less likely to fall. We pull a lot of chains.

When the storms began again on Thursday, our lights began to flicker. As I walked through the living room, I noticed that the dark clouds had made it quite dark in there, even though it was only about 4:00 p.m. I reached up to pull the chain. Light flashed for only a second or two and then our power went off and stayed off.

During our Wednesday night outreach class this week, the kids really got into the singing, especially when we sped songs up the second time through. This one is really fun when you speed it up (and touch each body part when you get to it):

My head, my shoulders, my knees, my toes
My head, my shoulders, my knees, my toes
My head, my shoulders, my knees, my toes
All belong to Jesus.

My toes, my knees, my shoulders, my head
My toes, my knees, my shoulders, my head
My toes, my knees, my shoulders, my head
All belong to Jesus.

On Wednesday and Thursday, we were pretty confident that our lights would come back on eventually.

Mother stayed at the assisted living in Ashland City while we were with John’s family last week. As we drove west from our house to pick her up on Tuesday afternoon, the sky was magnificent. After the storm, the lower clouds were huge dark puffs but the sinking sunshine behind them was brilliant.

Darkness and light

When our head, shoulders, knees, toes, and everything else belongs to Jesus, we can be absolutely certain that no matter how dark the darkness and no matter how long it lasts, it will always be followed by brilliant light.

Light arises in the darkness for the upright;
He is gracious and compassionate and righteous.
Psalm 112:4
