When we moved into this old house, I decided to make the funny little hallway beside the kitchen into a pantry. I decorated it as a country store, sponge painted the walls to look like brick, and painted Boyd’s Market on the wall in honor of Daddy and his daddy, Daddy Leland. Years ago Ray gave me a metal advertising sign to hang on the wall. The sign advertises Sunbeam® bread and has the words “Not By Bread Alone.” The sign is illustrated with Little Miss Sunbeam® who is shown in profile. Her head is bowed and her hair is pulled up into a ponytail of Shirley Temple curls.

Since 1942, Little Miss Sunbeam® has represented Sunbeam® bread. When I was a little girl in the 1950s and 60s, I used to dream of winning a contest as a Little Miss Sunbeam® lookalike.

Someone snapped this picture of Daddy and me at my grandparents’ home. I am all dressed up in an evening gown Mother made for me to wear in a community beauty contest.

As I was driving in Nashville the other day, I saw a billboard that was almost identical to my metal sign. There was the praying Little Miss Sunbeam® and the words “Not By Bread Alone,” but it also included two Bible references: Matthew 4:4 and Deuteronomy 8:3. In Matthew 4:4, Jesus told Satan why He would not turn stones to bread. The complete verse reads:

But He answered and said, “It is written,
‘Man shall not live on bread alone,
but on every word that proceeds
out of the mouth of God.’”
Matthew 4:4

In Matthew 4:4, Jesus quoted from the passage in Deuteronomy.

He humbled you and let you be hungry,
and fed you with manna which you did not know,
nor did your fathers know,
that He might make you understand
that man does not live by bread alone,
but man lives by everything that proceeds
out of the mouth of the Lord.
Deuteronomy 8:3

When Jesus encountered Satan’s temptations, He took His stand with God and His Word. I am thankful for every time you teach your children to do the same.

Put on the full armor of God,
so that you will be able to stand firm
against the schemes of the devil.
Ephesians 6:11
