Thankful for Thirty Years Ago

I remember the summer of 1990 when Ray and I wondered how our children would be educated that August. I listened to Christian radio and I listened to those little white plastic things that had spools of magnetic tape inside them. Do any of you remember those? They were called cassette tapes.

It wasn’t these tapes! This is just to give you the idea. These are some of Ray’s sermons from two decades ago. Yes, we know we can digitize them, but when???  🙂

I’m grateful for what I learned from those wise counselors who had such a lasting effect on our family and on me.

Now I’m thinking about all those mamas and daddies who are wondering the same thing thirty years later in this very interesting summer of 2020. I read two teeny weeny newspapers: our local Jackson County Sentinel and the Ashland City Times, which gives the news of my hometown. Each one comes to our house once a week. It takes me about ten minutes a week to get all the news. In the last Times, I read a treatise on education with some thoughts about how it ought to change.

That article got me to thinking about writing an article myself. I want to send a message to those mamas and daddies who are looking for answers about what they should do this fall. I am hoping that you will help me get it out to them. Would you please?

When I write my Daily Encouragement post for Friday, I plan to write it as an article for those mamas and daddies. I would appreciate it if you would pass it on to any mama or daddy or aunt or uncle or grandparent or friend who is wondering about what their beloved little ones and middle school-aged ones and teenaged ones will be doing this fall. I want to offer the kind of help that would have helped me thirty years ago.

In the article, I plan to introduce them to Notgrass History, too, and tell them about what we’ve been up to for the last 21 years. I am hoping that it will reassure them to know that homeschooling has been around a long time and that learning history can really help their children make sense of the world–and help them as parents make sense of the world, too.

I hope the article will be a blessing to you. I hope it will confirm the decisions you have already made and that it will encourage you to stay the course and keep on keeping on. It would mean a lot to me, if you could help me.

Please know how proud I am of you for homeschooling. It is not easy but I am so thankful that you are doing it and that we did it. I wouldn’t have it any other way. 1990 was a turning point in our lives. I am so very grateful.

Shout joyfully to the Lord, all the earth.
Serve the Lord with gladness;
Come before Him with joyful singing.
Know that the Lord Himself is God;
It is He who has made us, and not we ourselves;
We are His people and the sheep of His pasture.

Enter His gates with thanksgiving
And His courts with praise.
Give thanks to Him, bless His name.
For the Lord is good;
His lovingkindness is everlasting
And His faithfulness to all generations.
Psalm 100
