The Blessings of Remembering

Keeping a journal has become important to me. There are many things I want to remember: good times with Ray and our children, the adorable things our grandchildren do, and other sweet blessings. Journaling felt impossible for me when our children were little and when they were teenagers, too; but even then I had a book where I wrote down the particularly cute and funny things they did. I don’t remember now who the wise person was who told me I should do that, but I am thankful for her.

I am thankful for all the memories I can recall without a prompt and for the many things I can look back on now that would have been long forgotten without the advice of that forgotten person who told me to write down the precious things our children said and did. I should have written her name down!

Forgetting and remembering is a theme in the Bible. Paul thanked God as he constantly remembered Timothy in his prayers night and day (2 Timothy 1:3). Solomon told his son not to forget his father’s teaching, but to let his heart keep his father’s commandments (Proverbs 3:1).

I am thankful for God’s promise to remember us — and His promise to forget.

For I will be merciful toward their wrongdoings,
And their sins I will no longer remember.
Hebrews 8:12

Paul reminded Timothy to remember Jesus. That is what we are doing in special ways this month . . .

. . . and every day all year.

Remember Jesus Christ,
risen from the dead,
descendant of David . . .
2 Timothy 2:8

The world needed Him on that day that God first sent Him to earth long ago, and the world needs Him now. When we look around us we can see how desperately the world needs Him now. Praise God that you are teaching your children to remember Him and His precepts. Remembering God’s precepts comes with a precious promise.

The lovingkindness of the Lord
is from everlasting to everlasting on those who fear Him,
and His righteousness to children’s children
to those who keep His covenant
and remember His precepts to do them.
Psalm 103:17-18
