The Privilege of Preparing Our Children

Ray and I went to Michigan this past weekend to attend a surprise birthday party for a close friend at noon on Saturday. We knew before we left that getting there would be a challenge. With a forecast of one to three inches of snow on Friday and the traffic of two big Michigan college football games on Saturday, we decided to drive part of the way on Thursday and the rest of the way on Friday. It’s a good thing. We drove through snow for a couple of hours on Friday afternoon.

Ray says this will look like “O-o-o” to you Southern mamas and like no big deal to you mamas who live where the cold winds blow.

The prediction of temperatures in the low 30s made us head upstairs to the chifferobe before we left to pull out our winter coats. By midday on Friday, it was time to wear them. We soon realized that we hadn’t done such a good job of putting them away at the end of last winter.

As we were about to sit down for lunch, Ray started pulling a glob of last year’s partially-melted lozenges out of his pocket. After we got back in the car, I realized that I had gone inside the restaurant, not only missing a big button on the front of my coat, but with a giant safety pin holding the missing button in plain view.

The purpose of homeschooling is to make sure our children are prepared for the future — their futures on earth and their futures forever. However, sometimes the desire to prepare for the future on earth gets in the way of enjoying the journey from here to there and also gets in the way of preparing for our children’s forever future.

God tells us again and again to make sure we are ready for that forever future. Jesus told a parable about ten women, five who were prepared and five who were not prepared.

What a privilege you have to enjoy each day with your children as you prepare them well for their future on earth and their future forever. Jesus loved us enough to remind us to be prepared, through the parable of the ten virgins and through His admonition for us at the end of the parable.

Be on the alert then,
for you do not know the day nor the hour.
Matthew 25:13

  1. I just love weather! And especially winter weather. I actually even enjoy traveling in weather. It can be dangerous and not as pleasant for the driver but still it’s yet another experience and a memory to share on down the line.
I’m cracking up thinking about you realizing you had a big pen showing on your coat in public! You probably felt silly as everything, wondering who all noticed but when you can laugh at yourself and even tell people about it, that’s even better. That is something I’m trying to teach Storm about. Prepare to be able to laugh at oneself!! It just makes life so much better to laugh!

    Thank you for the post
