Truckload of Fun

One day last week a couple of our grandchildren told me excitedly about the night when their family had camped out in the living room. It brought back sweet memories of the times when their mama and the rest of our family used to camp out in our living room. “We used to do that when your mama was little,” I said. “Mama told us” was the answer. One of the best affirmations that we did something right when our children were little is when they do the same thing with their own children.

Yesterday morning I sat down with one of Mary Evelyn’s school journals for some inspiration about what to share with you this morning. I was delighted to find this entry on the 22nd of May in 1996. At the time, Ray was 43, I was 42, John was 17, Bethany was 14, and Mary Evelyn was 12.

We just got back from a walk. Coming down the driveway, I was Dorothy, Mom was the lion, Bethany was the tin-man, John was the scarecrow, and Dad was Toto. It was a truckload of fun. We did the skip down the driveway, and Dad acted like a dog.

“A truckload of fun” is a quote from one of our favorite family movies, director Frank Capra’s “You Can’t Take It With You,” starring Jimmy Stewart. I hope this school week is filled with your very own “truckload of fun!”

Here we were a few years later, still having fun.

. . . a cheerful heart has a continual feast.
