Unexpected Lyrics

Ray and I are grateful for the faith-building hymn lyrics that are in our heads after our many decades of singing them. What beautiful thoughts our parents put into us by taking us to church from the time we were babies. Sometimes those lyrics come to mind in unexpected moments.

One day last week Ray was finishing up an early morning to-do list, part of which was out in the cold. Realizing that his list was almost done and looking forward to getting into the warm house, he said to himself: “This will soon be o’er.”

This was another Tennessee winter day last week. And, no, my 25-year old coat is not real fur, but, in the speech I grew up with, it is REAL WARM.

Ray’s mind had gone back to a hymn we have sung in church many times since we married: “Living by Faith” by James Wells. After a line about Christ’s return, the song assures us: “Our troubles will then all be o’er.”

Proverbs 4 talks about what a child learns from a parent. Thank you for the beautiful thoughts you are putting into your children’s hearts and minds today. They’ll be a comfort all their lives.

My son, pay attention to my words;
Incline your ear to my sayings.
They are not to escape from your sight;
Keep them in the midst of your heart.
For they are life to those who find them,
And healing to all their body.
Watch over your heart with all diligence,
For from it flow the springs of life.
Proverbs 4:20-23
