Women Who Made a Difference

In our Wednesday morning ladies Bible class yesterday, we read Titus 2:1-8. Then, concentrating on verses 3-5, . . .

Older women likewise are to be reverent in their behavior,
not malicious gossips nor enslaved to much wine,
teaching what is good, so that they may encourage the young women
to love their husbands, to love their children, to be sensible, pure,
workers at home, kind, being subject to their own husbands,
so that the word of God will not be dishonored.
Titus 2:3-5

. . . we talked about women who had blessed us.

Doug and Cora Beal Sheilds
This is Cora Beal Shields, who took me into her heart in my twenties; and her wise words have stayed in my heart these many decades since. Cora Beal and her husband Doug are two of the best examples Ray and I have ever known. Now in their early nineties, they still are.

As the facilitator of this class and also the youngest member, I cherish hearing the long ago stories of the other class members.

Miss Helen praised her mother-in-law.

Miss Katherine said that everything she knows she learned from her grandmother.

Miss Frances spoke of the godly woman who lived across the creek from her before “the road was put in.” When Miss Frances was a little girl, she loved to spend the night at this neighbor’s home. The next morning she made “gravy and biscuits and all.” The other ladies chimed in that those days are a thing of the past!

Miss Frances never saw her neighbor across the creek flustered even “with those six children.” She exemplified what a person should be. She was helpful, kind, and pretty. Again the other ladies chimed in, agreeing that, yes, she certainly was a pretty woman.

One class member described a woman she admired as “jolly” and “wonderful to be around.”

A teacher was described as easy-going.

One lady talked about a nurse. Again the class chimed in, going on and on about this wonderful woman. One lady said, “Her presence made me feel better.”

We always begin our class by taking prayer requests. Yesterday someone asked that we pray for the family of Jerldine Huffines. Later her name came up as someone a class member looked up to. When Miss Jerldine taught Sunday School, she didn’t mince words, and you grew spiritually.

To be remembered as a mother-in-law who made a difference in the lives of her children-in-law, a grandmother who taught much to her grandchildren, a helpful and kind neighbor, and a jolly, wonderful-to-be-around, easy-going woman whose presence made others feel better– that is a goal worth reaching.

Your adornment must not be merely external—
braiding the hair, and wearing gold jewelry, or putting on dresses;
but let it be the hidden person of the heart,
with the imperishable quality of a gentle and quiet spirit,
which is precious in the sight of God.
1 Peter 3:3-4
