You Do What You’ve Got to Do

Ray and I saw Roger and Ruby at Helen’s yesterday. As we chatted, we talked about their grandson who was up until after 2:00 a.m. with his baby the other night while his wife was under the weather. That reminded me of something my mother-in-law used to say to young mothers: “When I had little children, I thought I would never be that tired again . . . . And I haven’t!”

As we four grandparents nodded in agreement, Roger said, “You do what you’ve got to do.” Again, we nodded in agreement. Remembering the years they took turns with their siblings while taking care of their parents, I brought up that you do that when taking care of your parents, too.

Ruby said that you look back sometimes and wonder how you did it, but the Lord helped you through it. Again, nods of agreement before Roger said, “And you have no regrets.”

I am so proud of you for doing what you have to do. It’s worth the “no regrets.”

The world reaps the benefits of two women who did what they had to do two thousand years ago. Their names were Eunice and Lois. Paul wrote these words to their grandson and son, Timothy:

For I am mindful of the sincere faith within you,
which first dwelt in your grandmother Lois
and your mother Eunice,
and I am sure that it is in you as well.
2 Timothy 1:5
