A Never-to-Be-Repeated Moment

On Wednesday morning, as I prepared to leave for ladies Bible class, I pulled the trash can from under the sink, opened the lid, and threw in some trash. Just after that, Ray walked into the kitchen. At the exact moment that I lowered the lid, Ray tossed in a light bulb. It hit the edge of the lid and shot out, hitting the floor, and breaking into dozens of pieces.

Ray was doing something helpful and I was doing something helpful, but the combination created a mess on the kitchen floor. I thought it was hilarious. It was one of those never-to-be-repeated moments.

Each of us is at a stage of life that is filled with never-to-be-repeated moments. Those moments are extra-special when our children are at home with us, but they don’t stop then.

Earlier this week, I encouraged you and myself to be “Looking for What We’ve Been Missing.” That day I saw a brilliant cardinal out my kitchen window and a beautiful rainbow in our backyard. The rainbow was very low. It began in our neighbor’s field next door . . .

. . . and ended in our backyard.

The rainbow felt so near and three-dimensional. I tried to describe it to our daughter Bethany. Imagine the experience of flying through a cloud. It was like seeing one of those clouds up close, except instead of seeing white puffs of moisture, what we saw was like particles of colored light. That rainbow filled us with joy, just as God intended.

At the time we were in a rush to get to Cookeville to do some errands, but in our excitement we lingered until the rainbow began to fade away.

Yesterday four of our grandchildren came to see us. The youngest let go of his mama’s hand just long enough to hand a mini-bouquet to his Notty before returning to hold his mama’s hand. Each of the children brought a bouquet. Here they are on our kitchen table.

Let’s try that looking-for-what-we’ve-been-missing again today before those moments fade away.

The Lord’s lovingkindnesses indeed never cease,
For His compassions never fail.
They are new every morning;
Great is Your faithfulness.
Lamentations 3:22-23

  1. Those are some of the loveliest bouquets I’ve ever seen. Their beauty lies in the love imbued by the givers. They are very much like the most lovely ones ever my dear young son brings me. I am quite partial to the dandelions myself 😉
