Wise Lessons for Children of All Ages

In the first chapters of Proverbs, Solomon teaches his son lessons about life. At the beginning of chapter 3, he says:

My son, do not forget my teaching,
But let your heart keep my commandments . . .
Proverbs 3:1

Solomon was a wise man. His wisdom was a direct gift from God.

Now God gave Solomon wisdom
and very great discernment and breadth of mind,
like the sand that is on the seashore.
1 Kings 4:29

The chapter goes on to tell that Solomon’s wisdom surpassed the wisdom of the east and of Egypt. Solomon was, in fact, wiser than all men. He spoke 3,000 proverbs and wrote 1,005 songs. His wisdom included knowledge of trees, animals, birds, creeping things, and fish. People from all peoples came to hear his wisdom.

When Solomon shared life lessons with his son, he talked about wise behavior, righteousness, justice, equity, and prudence. He spoke about the fear of the Lord.

Solomon told his son to hear his father’s instruction and to treasure his commandments. He told him not to forsake his mother’s teaching.

Solomon told his son not to consent if sinners enticed him. He warned his son about people who speak perverse things, about those who leave the paths of uprightness, of those who delight in doing evil, and of those who are devious. He warned his son about sexual sin.

Solomon said that wisdom and discretion would be life to his son’s soul. He said that wisdom would make him walk securely. He said that wisdom would make him able to lie down and not be afraid, to lie down and have sleep that is sweet. He told his son that the Lord would be his confidence.

Solomon praised those who acquire wise counsel and said that fools despise wisdom and instruction.

Dew is one of the many things I enjoy on morning walks. The dew was especially beautiful this past Sunday morning, as you can see in the photos that follow. If you look closely, you can see sparkling dew in each one. Solomon had something to say about dew, too.

The Lord by wisdom founded the earth,
By understanding He established the heavens.
By His knowledge the deeps were broken up
And the skies drip with dew.
Proverbs 3:19-20
